Race to the Stones Training Plan

from £25.00

Race to the Stones is not just another 100km. It is a long, exposed day on fast but unforgiving trails where pacing discipline, durability and fuelling matter more than raw speed. This training plan has been built specifically for the demands of the Ridgeway and the realities of racing a non technical but relentlessly runnable ultra.

The plan is available in three levels so you can train appropriately for your background and experience.

Beginner
Designed for runners stepping up to their first 100km or moving beyond the marathon or 50km distance. The focus is on progressive volume, safe adaptation, walk run efficiency and learning how to manage long hours on your feet without breakdown.

Intermediate
For runners with ultra experience who want a stronger, more controlled performance. This level introduces more structured intensity, longer sustained efforts and improved pacing strategy across back to back training weekends.

Advanced
Built for experienced ultra runners chasing a competitive or personal best result. Expect higher training density, purposeful quality sessions and specific preparation for maintaining pace late into the race when fatigue is highest.

  • This plan reflects how Race to the Stones is actually raced.

You will develop the ability to hold steady effort over long runnable terrain, manage energy output across the full distance and fuel consistently without relying on guesswork. Strength and durability are built alongside running volume to protect against common overuse issues that appear in long trail ultras.

The taper is deliberate rather than aggressive, ensuring you arrive rested without losing the rhythm required for a race of this length.

  • Race to the Stones is a 100km ultramarathon that follows the historic Ridgeway trail from Overton Hill to Avebury, winding through open chalk downs, rolling farmland, and ancient landmarks, including Neolithic stone circles. The course is mostly runnable but requires careful pacing, consistent fuelling, and mental endurance over a full day on your feet.

Unlike many UK ultras, Race to the Stones is deceptively fast in sections, which can tempt runners into early overexertion.
