Trans Gran Canaria is one of the world's most iconic mountain ultra races. Steep volcanic climbs, relentless elevation gain, technical descents and warm conditions make this an event that demands specific preparation. Success isn't just about running long distances, it's about developing the strength and endurance to keep climbing, and the confidence to descend efficiently when fatigue sets in.
This training plan has been designed to prepare you for exactly that. Alongside building your aerobic fitness, there is a strong emphasis on hill training to develop climbing strength, downhill durability and the resilience needed to tackle one of Europe's toughest trail running events.
Using RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion), every session adapts to the terrain, weather and how you're feeling on the day. This is a far more effective way of training for mountain ultras, where elevation and technical trails have a far greater impact on your effort than pace alone.
Throughout the 20-week plan, you'll develop:
Aerobic endurance for sustained mountain running
Powerful climbing legs through dedicated hill sessions
Downhill strength and durability to cope with long technical descents
Confidence running on steep and rocky terrain
Efficient pacing for long climbs and race-day preparation
The resilience to keep moving when the mountains begin to take their toll
Whether your goal is simply to cross the finish line or achieve a new personal best, this plan will prepare you for the unique demands of Trans Gran Canaria and give you the confidence to embrace every climb.
We have separate plans available for the Marathon, Advanced 50km, Advanced 82km, Classic 126km and Half Marathon, allowing you to train specifically for the distance you've entered.
